The Dickson Cup
In Memory of Peter Dickson

Peter Dickson

In the fall of 1998, Halifax RFC lost Peter Dickson, a coach and a dear friend, to cancer (Non Hodgkin’s Lymphoma). Peter was also a coach and player for the Fredericton Loyalists. Peter Dickson, a native of Belfast Ireland, founded several clubs across Canada and represented Eastern Canada vs. Australia Barbarians.

In 1999, to celebrate the life of Peter Dickson, HRFC began to play the Loyalists in an annual match known as the Dickson Cup. With the formation of the Aliant league, the Dickson Cup has been adopted within this series of games.

While there are many players who will take the field to compete for this trophy and many who do not know who Peter Dickson was, there are still a number of club members who will remember Peter for the wonderful coach and mentor he was to HRFC, the Fredericton Loyalists, and the game of rugby.

The teams always play hard, the way Peter would have asked us to play. For Peter is watching us from above.

After the game, the cup is passed around so that everyone may donate to the Canadian Cancer Society.

Fast Fact: Although Halifax has won two Maritime Championships over the Loyalists in recent years (2000, 2002), Fredericton has won the Dickson Cup every year since 1999.
